How to Check for Lead Pipes in Your Triangle, NC Home

The requirement didn't stop there. On October 8, 2024, EPA issued the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements, requiring systems nationwide to identify and replace lead pipes within 10 years. An updated inventory is due again by November 1, 2027, and systems must make it publicly accessible — those serving more than 50,000 people must post it online.
What are the four categories on a lead service line inventory?
Every inventory sorts each service line into exactly one of four categories, and knowing what each means is the whole key to reading your own result correctly.

How does the DIY scratch-and-magnet test work?
If your inventory lists your line — usually the private side — as "unknown," a simple physical test can often identify the material without cutting into a wall. Raleigh Water publishes this exact method for residents to self-verify at home:
- Lead: scratches easily, shiny silver underneath, a magnet does not stick.
- Galvanized steel: hard to scratch, dull gray, a magnet sticks firmly.
- Copper: scratches to a bright orange or penny color, a magnet does not stick.
Find an exposed section of pipe — often where it enters the house near the water meter or in a basement or crawl space — gently scratch a small spot with a key or a coin, and hold a refrigerator magnet against it. Raleigh asks residents who run this test to email their results to customercare@raleighnc.gov so the utility can update its records.
Why does a lead line matter more than other plumbing issues?
Because lead behaves differently from almost everything else regulated in drinking water. EPA states plainly: "There is no safe level of lead exposure. In drinking water, the primary source of lead is from pipes." Does an inventory result change whether I need a whole-home water system?
No — and this is the part worth being clear-eyed about. An inventory answers a narrow question: what material is the pipe in the street, and what material is the pipe on your side of the meter.
It says nothing about the chlorine or chloramine taste in your water, nothing about the disinfection byproducts EPA regulates because of their own long-term health effects, nothing about PFAS, and nothing about the calcium and magnesium that build up in a water heater over years regardless of what the service line is made of.
