About 15% of Wake County homes are on private wells, with the share higher in neighboring Johnston, Franklin, Chatham and Granville counties. What's actually in Wake County municipal water?

Two categories, and they call for two different pieces of equipment.

Hardness minerals. Raleigh Water runs about 1.6 grains per gallon, which is soft on the USGS scale. Our own in-home testing across the Triangle measures 1.6 to 3.7 grains per gallon depending on the address — soft at the bottom of that range, and moderately hard at the top, since 3.7 gpg is roughly 63 mg/L against a 60 mg/L soft line. On the Cary/Apex side, the towns publish plant averages that are lower (Cary 25–30 ppm; Apex 33.3 ppm, or 1.9 gpg), which describe finished water leaving the plant rather than what reaches an individual tap.

Disinfectant and its byproducts. Both systems carry a residual disinfectant to the tap by design. The Cary/Apex plant forms chloramine by dosing chlorine and ammonia separately in the clearwell; Raleigh Water likewise runs chloramine most of the year and converts to free chlorine annually while flushing the distribution system. Disinfection byproducts follow: HAA9 19.9 ppb and TTHM 21.7 ppb in Raleigh's EWG listing, and TTHM 41 ppb, ranging up to 53, with HAA5 at 19 ppb in Apex's own 2024 report for the shared Cary/Apex system. All of it is compliant with EPA limits. Activated carbon is what removes disinfection byproducts and disinfectant taste from the water inside your house.

Why does a brand-new home need this at all?

Because "new" describes the plumbing, not the water. Every fixture, appliance and length of pipe in a new Wake County build is at the start of its service life, and the deposits that shorten that life accumulate gradually from the first gallon:

Soft water is not mineral-free water. That distinction is the entire case for treating a new home: at 1.6 to 3.7 grains per gallon nothing goes wrong in month one, and something measurable has changed by year ten.

When is the best time to install in a new build?

As early as the water service allows, for three practical reasons: the plumbing is the most accessible it will ever be, the garage or mechanical space is empty, and no appliance has yet spent part of its service life running untreated water. Does Wake County test private well water for new construction? Wells are tested at construction, but North Carolina does not regulate private well water after that point — there's no ongoing requirement and no annual report.
