The carbon in a standard system works by adsorption — it holds contaminants on its surface. Catalytic carbon is processed so the media also acts as a catalyst and chemically breaks compounds apart. That closes the two gaps plain carbon has: chloramine, which many utilities now use in place of free chlorine, and hydrogen sulfide, the rotten-egg smell in well water.
